Comments Off on Kerel, a library table and carrel in one
Libraries have experienced a profound change over the past two decades. As they adapt, some things don’t change: the need for quiet space to read and study, and a place for group learning. The patent-pending Kerəl supports both of these functions.
Simply flip the Kerəl tabletop upwards to reveal a secondary work-surface with privacy panels – the ubiquitous library table easily converts to a semi-private study carrel. In a matter of seconds and on an as-needed basis, students and staff can choose the modality that best suits the task at hand.
The Milder Partition offers an elegant solution with integrated SoundSoak panels to dampen sound, and translucent Acrylic panels let in light.
In response to a general frustration with the open office plan, Milder Office designed a partition system that allows workers to see and be seen at their choosing. Individual areas feel open yet enclosed, enabling workers to concentrate on the task at hand without feeling isolated.
Research has shown that that people do their best work in environments that allow for both social ‘buzz’ and activity while also providing them with boundaries and separation. The integrated SoundSoak acoustical wall panels absorb 50% to 90% of the sound striking the surface – reducing noise within a space and reducing noise transfer between areas.
The Milder Partition can stand alone or can be mounted to our workstations allowing for flexible floor layouts that vary from area to area. The system’s custom aluminum hardware is typical Milder, sleek, and minimal. The pre-finished birch plywood and SoundSoak are available in a range of colors. We also offer UV printed Pantones colors to match branding or existing color schemes.
We first connected to the Henry Street Settlement (HSS) through our work and longstanding relationship with the Lower Eastside Tenement Museum, for which we designed and produced office furniture as well as retail fixtures and displays for their museum store. After years of negotiating with the city, Henry Street Settlement was able to add the Firehouse to their headquarter row on Henry Street. Working with Renee Epps, Facilities Manager at HSS, and a team of architects from Beyer Binder Bell, we developed and produced workstations and meeting room furniture for the four floors of the Firehouse. Because groups of workstations are clustered in relatively small and tall spaces, we worked with a sound engineer to limit the level of sound by adding Sound Soak panels and translucent Acrylic panels to our standard partition wall.
Individual single-pedestal workstations have partition installed on two or three sides, allowing for workers to see and be seen at their choosing. Individual areas feel open yet enclosed. The Milder Partitions can stand alone or can be mounted to our workstations allowing for flexible floor layouts that vary from area to area. Also, research has shown that that people do their best work in environments that allow for both social buzz while also providing them with boundaries (separation). We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to be part of this project team and are excited that the Firehouse has been put back into service for this amazing/historical neighborhood organization.

The Milder Butcher Block table was awarded Gold Distinction as part of the 2019 Modern Library Awards, a product competition judged by Librarians who have specified our products for their libraries. Across the nation, libraries are fast becoming STEM and Maker-focused, offering their communities programming to inspire and empower kids and adults alike to make, create and learn new skills.
Re-designed for a shop and maker environment, our Maker Series offers a robust reboot of the Milder Furniture System. The work tables boast a 1.5″ thick maple butcher block top that can take all the abuse as well as the love, from clamps, to fabric patterns and laptops. Tables can be easily moved or ganged to support a variety of studio and classroom activities. A range of sizes are available.
The Maker Series includes a mobile storage partition, tool carts, and the butcher block tables. We design with durability in mind. The pipe base with cross-bars and diagonal struts create a strong self-supporting base that the butcher block top is clipped onto. The butcher block top can be rejuvenated through annual sanding and oiling (instead of using lacquer). Table aprons are made of pre-finished birch ply and are available in a variety of colors as well as HPL laminate. Aprons shown here in grey pre-finished birch ply.
The melamine film-faced plywood is available in a variety of colors including: natural (clear), red, blue, yellow, blue, and dark brown. High pressure laminate is also available. As always, customization is our strength, and we can build to your preferred specifications.

The Mobile Storage Partition (MSP) and MSP Mini are designed to support dynamic and evolving environments.
A true hybrid for the work and learning environment, the containers are are part display board, part storage, part movable wall. The perfect complement for any studio, office or school, the units are easily moved from one space to another and can be ganged to partition the space as needed.
Options include: markerboard (magnetic markerboard available), pin-up surface (cork), paper roll, baskets, shelves, drawers, and doors (locks optional).
Library Carrels provide a semi private study/work space and are designed for the university and library settings where students and researchers prefer to work undisturbed. The height of the (three sided) partition can be modified to increase or decrease sight lines. Available as single or double sided, the carrels can be ganged to create unique spaces within a large open plan. For example, use a row of single sided carrels to partition a space for different functions. The carrels may be specified with lighting, storage/lockers, power and data, pin-wall surfaces and more.
